Chapter One: The Al-Mansouriya Alley Case

Not everything you see is real, and no one is good enough. We are all evil, and I exclude no one. Each of us is good enough to hide what is inside. You are not kind enough, but you haven't had the opportunities to show the evil side of yourself. Oh reader, preserve whatever good remains inside you, and do not allow the bad version of yourself to come out into this world.

The First Case

In the heart of ancient Fatimid Cairo, where the tales of yesterday and the whispers of today intertwine in a maze of narrow alleys and closely packed houses, Detective Abdul Rahman Gabr stood as a quiet focal point amidst the city's clamor. In his early thirties, he possessed an unnoticeable presence but piercing eyes capable of piercing through veils and uncovering falsehoods. He grew up in the embrace of this old city, learned the language of the streets and the tones of silence, and realized that truths often hide behind glittering appearances and false masks.
Abdul Rahman resides in a simple apartment in the Attarin Alley, his quiet haven adorned by his passion for reading and contemplation. He is surrounded by overcrowded bookshelves, his computer screen displaying complex mind maps of unsolved cases, and old photographs preserving faces and places from a bygone era. He begins his day with a cup of bitter coffee while watching the alley's movement from his window, analyzing the gestures and glances of passersby, as if decoding hidden messages the city writes every morning.
This morning, while his thoughts were entangled with the details of a complex financial extortion case, his mobile phone vibrated, announcing a new call. The caller was Captain Tariq Ezz El-Din, his calm and disciplined colleague at the Al-Gamaliya police station.
"Mr. Abdul Rahman, good morning. There is a report of a murder in Al-Mansouriya Alley, behind the Al-Azhar Mosque. The situation... there is something unsettling about it."
Abdul Rahman, who knew that "something unsettling" from Tariq often meant a puzzle requiring his intervention, sat up straight. "What is the news, Tariq?"
"The victim... a woman named Hajja Zeinab Al-Kurdi, a widow in her late sixties. And the body was found in the living room... covered with a prayer rug in a very organized manner, and around her are unlit candles arranged in a specific way."
A frown formed between Abdul Rahman's eyebrows. The arrangement of a crime scene often reveals the killer's mindset and hidden motives. "The exact address of the alley and the house number?"
Tariq gave him the address. Al-Mansouriya Alley was part of Cairo's historical fabric, an area whose details and secrets Abdul Rahman knew very well.
"I'm on my way, Tariq." Abdul Rahman said, putting on his cotton jacket and grabbing the keys to his modest car.
Minutes later, Abdul Rahman arrived at the crime scene to find the area surrounded by police cars and yellow tape. Captain Tariq Ezz El-Din was waiting for him at the entrance of the house.
"Welcome, Mr. Abdul Rahman." Tariq said appreciatively, making way for him to enter. "Thank you for coming so quickly."
"Don't mention it, Tariq. What are the latest updates?"
Tariq pointed inside the house, an old house with a small inner courtyard covered in climbing plants. "The neighbors noticed Hajja Zeinab's absence from her usual routine. She used to sit in the courtyard after the dawn prayer. When she didn't answer the knocks on the door, they got worried and called the police."
They entered the house. The smell of old incense still lingered in the air, mixed with a faint, unfamiliar scent. The lighting was dim, and the furniture was traditional and carefully maintained. In the living room, the body lay on a prayer mat. Hajja Zeinab was lying on her back, covered with a green prayer rug embroidered with golden threads. Around her head, there were five unlit white candles, arranged in the shape of a pentagram.
Abdul Rahman leaned in to examine the scene closely. There were no obvious signs of apparent violence on the body.
"Are there any obvious signs of violence, Tariq? Broken doors, scattered furniture?" Abdul Rahman asked, scanning the room with a comprehensive look.
"The door was locked from the inside. There is no broken in or noticed violence in the room." Tariq answered.
Abdul Rahman stood in front of the body, pondering the arrangement of the candles and the prayer rug. There was a clear intention in this composition, as if the killer wanted to leave a signature or a riddle.
"Who was the last person to see Hajja Zeinab?" Abdul Rahman asked.
"Her neighbor in the adjacent house says she chatted with her yesterday evening after the evening prayer. She didn't notice anything unusual." Tariq said, thinking.
Abdul Rahman pointed to the candles. "These candles... were they part of her usual religious rituals?"
"According to the neighbors, she was religious and devout, but they never saw her perform such rituals." Tariq replied.
Abdul Rahman took a deep breath. "Tariq, I want a detailed report from the forensic doctor as soon as possible. And gather all the information about Hajja Zeinab. Her relatives, neighbors, anyone connected to her. Focus on any of her special habits or beliefs, and any potential disputes with others."
"Yes, sir." Tariq said seriously.
Abdul Rahman kept staring at the laid body, and at the candles arranged in a striking order. His intuition told him that this crime was not random. There was a thin thread connecting this scene to something deeper, something that would require Abdul Rahman's piercing eye to uncover in the heart of the silent Al-Mansouriya Alley.
