Suad is the child that Nabila had always wished for.
Chapter One: The Night of the Ritual
The night in the villages is different…
A heavy silence, and a darkness as if it's swallowing everything around it.
In a small village in the middle of agricultural lands, lived a woman named Nabila.
A simple woman with calm features… but inside her was a great pain.
Nabila has been married to Hassan for more than 12 years.
Their house is small, on the edge of the village, facing some agricultural land, with the canal behind them.
But this house…
Was missing only one thing.
A child......
Every morning Nabila wakes up early, sweeps the house, and prepares breakfast for her husband before he goes down to the land.
But no matter how much she tried to keep herself busy… the words she heard from people were breaking her heart.
Once, one of the neighbors said to her while she was standing at the door of the house:
"Nabila… is there no good news yet?"
Nabila smiled a weak smile and said:
"Not yet, Umm Sayed… God is generous."
But as soon as she entered the house… her tears fell.
Not just the people's talk…
Even Hassan began to change.
He became silent a lot…
And his look became full of distress.
And one night while he was sitting on the mat in front of the house, he suddenly said to her:
"People have started talking, Nabila… and I don't know what to do."
Her heart ached… but she tried to compose herself.
"What do you mean, Hassan?"
He was silent for a while… then he said in a low voice:
"My mother tells me I must marry another…"
The word fell on her like a knife.
She didn't reply…
But she got up and went inside the house, feeling as if the whole world was closing in on her.
The days passed… and the pressure increased. Until one day, while she was returning from the market, she met
an old woman, her eyes were strange as if she saw what was inside people.
She stopped her and said:
"You are Nabila, Hassan’s wife… right?"
She was surprised and asked her:
"Yes… do you know me?"
The old woman smiled a mysterious smile and said:
"The whole village knows you… the woman who doesn't conceive."
Nabila felt ashamed… but before she could leave, the old woman approached her and said in a low voice: "If I told you there is a way to make you conceive… would you do it?"
Nabila's heart beat fast. "Really, what way?"
The old woman looked around as if afraid someone would hear, then said:
"There is a woman living on the edge of the canal… her name is Umm Ratiba."
And she paused for a moment before continuing:
"People say she performs works… and magic."
Nabila took a step back and said in fear:
"I have nothing to do with these things."
But the old woman said a sentence that made her go silent:
"So when Hassan marries someone else… what will you say then?"
The words entered her heart like fire.
She returned home that day unable to think of anything but those words.
Days passed…
And the idea refused to leave her head.
Until one night…
She woke up from sleep and found Hassan was not in the house.
She went out looking for him, and heard his voice in front of the house talking to his mother..... and his mother was saying:
"I found you a good bride, Hassan…"
Nabila's whole body trembled.
She returned to her room quickly, and sat on the bed thinking.
And suddenly…
She made a decision that changed everything.
The next day before sunset…
Nabila was walking alone towards the edge of the village.
The road was empty…
And the air was strangely still.
Until she reached an old house…
Its wooden door was broken… and the smell around it was heavy.
That was Umm Ratiba's house.
Nabila knocked on the door hesitantly.
After moments…
The door opened slowly.
An old woman appeared, her hair white and her eyes sharp.
She looked at Nabila from top to bottom and said:
"I was waiting for you."
Nabila was shocked... "Waiting for me?"
Umm Ratiba smiled a strange smile and said:
"Those like you… come here in the end."
Then she approached her and said in a low voice:
"You came to conceive… right?"
Nabila was silent for a moment… then said:
"Yes."
The woman let her into the house…
And sat in front of her.
She took out a small dish containing incense…
And the smell began to fill the place.
Then she said a sentence that made the blood freeze in Nabila's veins:
"I can make you conceive…"
And she paused for a moment before continuing:
"But the one who will come… will not be like the rest of the children."
Nabila looked at her anxiously and asked:
"What do you mean?"
Umm Ratiba approached her and said:
"You will know later…"
Then she held out her hand and said:
"Give me a lock of your hair… and a drop of blood."
Nabila was terrified…
But the image of Hassan marrying someone else was killing her.
So she held out her hand… and from that moment… the curse had begun.
